Description

Breakaway is played on a 27′ x 54′ field, with alliances of three teams each operating their robots from behind alliance walls, located at each end of the field. Two divider hills extend across the width of the field, dividing it into three zones. A tower extends from the center of each hill. A tunnel under each tower forms a passage between the zones. Robots play Breakaway with standard soccer balls. The objective is to score points by kicking or rolling balls through the goals at your end of the field. Robots can use their cameras to track the vision targets above each goal. This allows them to target the goals from anywhere on the field. Each alliance starts with one robot in each zone on their side of the field. At the start of the game, one ball is in the zone closest to their goal, two ballsĀ  are in the middle zone, and three are at the zone at the far end of the field. The match starts with a 15 second autonomous period. During this period, robots try to shoot balls into their goals. After making their shots, they move out of the way to avoid blocking their partners. Then, the human drivers step up and take control of the robot for the two minute tele-op period. During this period, drivers control their robots to try and score goals, which can be done from anywhere on the field. Shots can also be blocked by the opposing alliance , robots can access the zones by way of the dividers or tunnel underneath the towers. When going over the hills, teams have to be careful that their robot does not flip over. This is an aspect of the game which will draw heavily into the design of the bot. As balls are scored, human players pick them up and pass them to the center of the alliance station. The trident is used to place balls on the return rack to reenter them into play. Near the end of the match, teams migrate towards the towers, with the ability to earn bonus points at the end of the match by getting on the platform, hanging by the tower, or hanging of a robot hanging off the tower.
