What is FIRST?
"To Create a world where science and technology are celebrted... where young people dream of becoming science and technology heros"-Dean Kamen."
FIRST is a competition that prasies Robotics, Teamwork, and Gracious profetionalism. In fact, FIRST students are 3 times more to get a degree in engineering, and 4 times more likly to get a job as an engineer. Each team has six weeks to design, build, and program a giant robot. With over 1,500 teams, 156,000 students, and 44,000 mentors - the competition is fierce!
The game
This years game: Overdrive! The objective is to roll 10 lbs, 40 in. diameterballs around a circular race track. There are two periods, a HYBRID period and an TELE-OPERATED period. During the hybrid period, robots knock the balls from bars 6.5 ft. bars, guided by a ROBO COACH. Then, the tele-operated period, humas step up, and take control of the robot. The robots make laps around he feild or balls are either passed over the bars or across the finish line to get points. for twelve extra points at the end of the match, balls are replaced on the bars. The team with the most points win. Want to step up to the challange? Join team 2449 in room 311 mon-thurs, 3:00 PM- 7:00 PM, or on Sat from 8:00 AM- 3:00 PM.
The Team
The history of team 2449, Out Of Orbit, is much like any other. A mentor approaching a teacher to try and start a team where students learn gracious professionalism and teamwork while also gaining real world knowledge of engineering. Yet along the way there are things that have set us apart. Our diversity is a major component. Students from two different schools have come together to form a team to complete a difficult task in six weeks. Students from Marcos de Niza High School and James Madison Preparatory Academy have joined forces with mentors from Orbital, Intel, and ASU to create an impressive robot for any team, even more so a rookie team. In six weeks it is obvious how much everyone has learned from being here. Not only have we acquired knowledge in fields that many of us hope to go into, but also the life lessons gained are significant as well. Trouble-shooting and problem solving is no longer difficult. People who had never even met before are now friends and a team that can work together brilliantly. Team 2449 has come a very long way from where we started only a few weeks ago. We began as rookies that felt like we had no idea what we were doing on day one and now we have become confident. When Out Of Orbit walks into the competition we will have two goals in mind: To have fun, and to do our absolute best. This is definitely a history that has only just begun. There will be much more to come in our future.Want to Learn More?
